Sampson Azumah, the 21-year-old man who allegedly stabbed a firefighter at Adjiriganor last Friday, November 14, has been remanded into police custody by the Achimota Circuit Court.
Azumah, charged with causing unlawful harm, pleaded not guilty. He is expected to reappear on December 3, 2025.
Prosecution opposed bail because when the accused person is granted bail, he would not appear to stand trial because he had no fixed place of abode.
Again, the prosecution held that when Azumah was granted bail, he might interfere with witnesses who lived around the community.
The trial judge, after listening to the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo and considering the circumstances of the case, remanded the accused, Azumah, into police custody.
Chief Inspector Addo, who read the facts, said the complainant, Leslie Adjei Tetteh, is a Fire officer residing in Teshie in Accra, while Azumah is unemployed and a resident of Adjiriganor, East Legon.
Chief Inspector Addo said on November 14, 2025, at about 11:30 pm, the complainant, stationed at the Ghana National Fire Service Headquarters, was among firefighters who fought a fire that broke out at the residence of one Yvonne Okoro at Adjiriganor.
Prosecution said the scene attracted many people within the community, including the accused person.
While the firefighters were trying to douse the fire, bystanders were also pelting the officers with stones.
Prosecution said the complainant, while trying to fold the water holes of their fire tender after the fire had been brought under control, Azumah came out of the crowd and attacked the complainant for deliberately sprinkling water on him.
Azumah, who was aggressive, did not wait for the complainant to explain but pulled a screwdriver concealed in his waist bag and stabbed the complainant on his left arm and fled.
Prosecution said the complainant was rushed to the hospital for treatment, and a report was made to the Police at East Legon, and a medical report was issued to him to seek further medical care.
Prosecution said on November 17, 2025, Azumah was arrested at his hideout.
During investigations, Azumah admitted the offence and the screwdriver used in committing the offence was retrieved.
Meanwhile, Assistant Chief Fire Officer II, Rashid Nisawu, Greater Accra Regional Commander, recounted that issues of harming fire personnel had become rampant.
He encouraged personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) not to be perturbed by the incident because the service would be following Azumah’s case to its logical conclusion.
Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency observed that GNFS personnel came to the court in their numbers in solidarity with the victim.
