Martin Kpebu released from OSP detention

Martin Kpebu released from OSP detention

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has been released from detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Mr. Kpebu was reportedly arrested for allegedly obstructing an OSP officer after appearing at the office in response to an invitation on Wednesday, December 3.

He was subsequently detained and granted bail, with conditions requiring him to show landed property in his name and provide one surety.

Myjoyonlie sources indicated that his lawyers worked on meeting these bail conditions, but upon returning to the OSP, Mr. Kpebu was not at the office.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3 after his release, Mr. Kpebu described his detention as needless.

“I know I have not done anything wrong, so I will be released,” he said.

He confirmed that he had an altercation with a military officer at the OSP.

“The military officer said I am stupid, and I also said he is stupid. So we exchanged words,” he recalled.

He further claimed, “My arrest is a confirmation that Kissi Agyebeng is incompetent.”

Mr. Kpebu also reiterated his intention to petition President John Mahama for the removal of the Special Prosecutor.

“I will petition for his removal. I have several issues against him,” he stated.

Mr. Kpebu had attended the OSP to respond to corruption allegations he made against Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, but insisted he would not cooperate unless the investigative committee was independently constituted.

Mr Kpebu, who spoke to JoyNews Fatawu Bayaga before entering the building, accused the OSP of repeatedly mishandling the process.

He said his two previous visits were “botched” because he was made to appear before officers who report directly to Mr Agyebeng.

“I am hoping that they would get it right this time,” he said.

“They kept making me appear before subordinates. Subordinates can’t investigate their boss. It’s incompetence.”

He insisted that he is fully prepared to cooperate, but only if the committee is properly set up.
