New board of Volta Senior High School rallies communities to build centre of excellence

When Volta Senior High School (VOTASCO) opened its doors in Dzita a few years ago, it was more than the launch of a new educational institution. For families from Agbledomi, Anyanui, Atiteti, Fuveme, Tunu, Bomigo, Adzidokpo, and surrounding coastal communities, it represented hope — a chance for their children to access quality education closer to home without the long and costly journeys to far-off schools.

Today, that hope is being given fresh direction. The newly constituted Board of Governors of the school, chaired by Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has pledged to nurture VOTASCO into a Centre of Excellence that truly reflects the aspirations of the people it serves.

“Volta Senior High School is not just about classrooms and exams; it is the promise of a better tomorrow for children whose parents fish in the lagoons, farm along the coast, and trade in our markets,” Dr. Apetorgbor said. “We owe it to these communities to give their children the chance to shine.”

A Lifeline for Coastal Families

Before VOTASCO’s establishment, many parents in the Anlo District struggled to find placement for their wards in senior high schools outside the enclave. Some children dropped out because of the cost of travel and boarding, while others simply gave up on their dreams. The school has since eased that burden, offering hundreds of young people a chance to continue their education within reach of their families.

Community members now see the school as a lifeline. For mothers selling fish at Anyanui, for fathers casting their nets at Tunu, and for grandparents raising children in Bomigo, the school has become a symbol of progress.

The Board’s Vision

The new Board says it is determined to build on this foundation by focusing on:

Expanding enrollment so that no child in the area is denied an education;

Improving infrastructure to create a safe and inspiring learning environment;

Attracting strategic partnerships and funding to support growth;

Upholding discipline and academic excellence; and

Encouraging deep community involvement so that the school truly belongs to the people.

A Collective Effort

But the Board insists that success cannot come from its members alone. Chiefs, opinion leaders, the district assembly, alumni, NGOs, parents, and development partners are all being called upon to rally behind the school.

“With unity of purpose, Volta Senior High School will rise as a true Centre of Excellence, producing disciplined and globally competitive graduates,” Dr. Apetorgbor assured.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As one of the newest schools in the Volta Region, VOTASCO still faces challenges — from infrastructure needs to limited resources. Yet for the communities it serves, its existence is already rewriting the narrative for many children who might otherwise have been left behind.

For the people of Dzita and its neighbouring towns, Volta Senior High School is not just another institution. It is a story of hope, resilience, and the shared dream of a brighter future.
