Northern Region Police Arrest 112 Suspects in Major Crime Crackdown

The Ghana Police Service in the Northern Region has arrested 112 suspects in a series of operations targeting drug peddling, drug use, and prostitution.

Northern Regional Police Commander Wisdom Lavoe announced the figures while addressing the media in Tamale.

According to DCOP Lavoe, 55 of the suspects have already been taken to court, while 57 remain under investigation. “Nine suspects have been convicted, with five sentenced and four sentences deferred,” he said. He added that 46 others are awaiting trial as investigations continue.

New Task Force Deployed

The Regional Command has set up a special task force, the Red Maria Team, to replace the IGP Special Operations Team, which was recently recalled from the region.

“We want to assure the public that the Red Maria Team is here to stay. We need the cooperation of residents to provide vital information on the hideouts of criminals,” DCOP Lavoe said.

Motorbikes and Hideouts Targeted

During the operations, police seized 41 motorbikes suspected to have been used in criminal activities. Key raids were carried out at locations including Aboabo Forest, Moonshine Hotel, and Kumbungu Forest, which authorities believe were being used as hideouts by suspects.

DCOP Lavoe said the operations are part of intensified efforts to clamp down on crime and maintain law and order in the region. He also revealed plans to visit several traditional palaces to engage local leaders and reassure residents of the police’s commitment to improving security.

He urged the public to support the police with timely information to help sustain the fight against crime across the Northern Region.
