NPP demands full disclosure of Police deployment ahead of Akwatia by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure full transparency in security arrangements for the upcoming Akwatia by-election, citing concerns about potential infiltration by unauthorised individuals.

At a press briefing, the party’s Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, called for the immediate release of the list of senior police officers assigned to each electoral area, along with the regional commanders overseeing operations on election day.

“On the honour of the IGP, the NPP demands the requested list of senior officers to be deployed to each electoral area and the regional commanders who will be assisting them,” Mr. Ahiagbah stated.

The party also insisted that all police officers on duty must wear official name tags to enhance transparency and prevent impersonation.

“We request that every officer deployed for the election be in uniform with official name tags for easy identification and to avert infiltration by planned impostors,” he added.

These demands follow earlier allegations by the NPP that individuals aligned with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) were being trained under the guise of national security to pose as police officers during the polls.

The by-election is set for September 2, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, following the death of Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi on July 7 after a short illness.
