Presidential candidates must be resourceful - Bryan Acheampong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has said that every presidential candidate must demonstrate resourcefulness and the ability to mobilise support if they wish to lead the party.

Speaking to the media after his vetting on Tuesday, September 23, Dr Acheampong addressed concerns raised by some aspirants over the party’s GH¢4 million development fee.

Critics have questioned whether the fee puts the contest beyond the reach of less wealthy candidates.

“Well, as far as I am concerned, it was a requirement that came with the forms that we have to pay a development fee,” he said.

“If you are a presidential candidate, you have to be able to demonstrate resourcefulness, to be able to mobilize what is required to fulfill the party’s requirements.”

Dr Acheampong added that whether the fee is considered fair or excessive is for the party leadership to decide, noting that his team has met the requirement and is prepared to launch its campaign.

He further explained that the vetting process was primarily to confirm his eligibility under the constitution, but also included questions about his vision for uniting the party.

“The vetting largely is based on your qualification to be a presidential candidate and to satisfy the constitutional requirement.

“That is what the vetting is about. There were some side questions about how we bring the party together, or the vision on how, when you become a candidate, you unite us to win. Those questions were answered square and fair,” he added.
