Question former President Akufo-Addo on National Cathedral scandal – Jantuah to government

Private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah, has urged the John Dramani Mahama government to question former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his role in the controversial National Cathedral project.

Speaking during an interview on TV3 on July 21, 2025, Jantuah said that if there are laws that shield the former president from being prosecuted, those laws should be put on hold for now.

He contended that the former president must be held accountable for the project, as it originated under his administration.

The former president likely approved the majority of decisions related to the initiative, which has since seen nearly $100 million spent with only a pit to show for it.

He argued that the amounts of state funds that have gone into the project amount to causing financial loss to the state, and the former president must be questioned on it.

“We either waive the former president’s immunity or wait for the three years to be over and question him… You know why we should waive it? This land has seen incidents causing financial loss to the state. Call him and question him because this project went to cabinet.

“This particular project started with, ‘I had a conversation with God that if I win the election, I will build a cathedral in honour of His name.’ Was it part of the NPP manifesto? It wasn’t; it was a personal pledge,” he said.

“So, he owes responsibility to us to explain how monies have been spent,” he added.
