The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, Brother Morgan Ayawine, has reaffirmed his commitment to championing the rights and welfare of workers after securing re-election at the Union’s 12th Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Brother Ayawine expressed gratitude to God and to the Union’s delegates, management, staff and members for the confidence reposed in him and the leadership.
He described the outcome of the elections as a victory for continuity, efficiency and progress, stressing that the re-elected executives remain resolute in advancing the Union’s mandate.
Referencing attempts by what he called “enemies of progress” to destabilise the Union, Brother Ayawine noted that such efforts had been thwarted, paving the way for the ICU to consolidate its gains. “The strife is over, the battle is done; the victory of the Union is won,” he declared, underscoring his determination to act as the “Bula Matari” — the breaker of rocks — in defending workers’ interests.
The ICU General Secretary urged members to sustain their support and unity, highlighting that the protection of workers’ rights remains the Union’s foremost mission.
“Workers across Ghana look up to ICU-Ghana for the protection of their economic interests, and with all hands on deck, we shall move this great Union to the highest pedestal and make it the people’s Union,” he assured.
Reiterating the Union’s motto, “Unity is Strength”, Brother Ayawine pledged that the ICU would remain steadfast in defending the rights of Ghanaian workers, and prayed for God’s protection over all delegates and members as they returned home from the conference.
He extended appreciation to ICU’s legal counsels, social partners, the police service, the media, and UPSA’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, for their support in hosting a successful conference.
He also called for unity among all structures of the Union to ensure effective operations over the next four years.
At the conference held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Friday, 22 August 2025, below are the new executive members;
