Social enterprise firm, Sanitopia CIC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to construct 150 modern sanitation facilities for libraries across Ghana to safeguard the dignity, health, and well-being of users.

The partnership will also lead to the renovation of selected public libraries.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority
Ziblim Alhassan Betintiche, said, his outfit believes that access to information, literacy, and a conducive learning environment are fundamental rights that every Ghanaian child, youth, and adult deserves.

As such, it has, over the years, been intentional in advancing this mission by expanding access, improving infrastructure, integrating technology, and deepening community engagement.

“In line with this commitment, we have introduced innovative initiatives designed to bring libraries closer to every citizen. In addition to the 139 public library network across the country, the Ghana Library App, a zero-rated app, enables readers to access knowledge, books, and learning resources digitally from anywhere in the country. Thanks to Telecel and MTN, patrons and readers do not pay data charges when using the Ghana Library App”.

In support of the 24-Hour economy policy by the government, the Executive Director said it has implemented extended working hours at the National Children’s Library and the Mobile Library to ensure that children and families can access educational support even beyond the traditional working hours.

On behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Governing Board of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr. Betintiche expressed its deepest appreciation to the entire Sanitopia CIC team. “Your commitment to improving sanitation and public well-being aligns seamlessly with our vision of building libraries that nurture learning and community development”.

He assured that the facilities will be responsibly managed and well-maintained to ensure their long-term benefit to the communities they serve.

Sanitopia Committed to Achieving SDGs

Richard Acheampong, Founder of Sanitopia CIC, said his outfit’s vision is to build 2,000 toilets in Ghana within five years — a mission aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To achieve this, Sanitopia is focusing on three core pillars

  1. Community-Centred Sanitation Facilities:
Building affordable, safe, and adaptable sanitation facilities that meet the unique needs of each community.
  2. Waste-to-Value Innovation:
Transforming human waste into biogas and fertiliser, turning a public health challenge into an environmental and economic opportunity.
  3. Capacity Building and Partnerships:
Training communities, empowering local sanitation enterprises, and working with schools and clinics to ensure lasting change.

“This initiative is not merely about infrastructure — it is about health, dignity, and education. It is about giving our children the safe, clean environment they need to learn, grow, and thrive without fear of disease or discomfort”.

He explained that the 150 facilities will not just be brick and mortar, but rather they will stand as symbols of respect for children, progress for communities, and Ghana’s determination to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

He called on the Government of Ghana, Corporate Ghana, multinational corporations, NGOs, and philanthropists, both at home and abroad, to join the Sanitopia to achieve this vision.
