Sports Ministry settles Black Queens’ outstanding bonuses; $9,000 paid to each player

The Black Queens have had their owed bonuses from their performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) settled following their win over Egypt on Tuesday.

The Sports Ministry settled the owed bonuses after the team thrashed Egypt in their final game of the 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Each player received a cheque of $9,000 for their role in the Black Queens finishing third at the continental showpiece, which was staged in Morocco in July.

Joy Sports checks reveal $500 was withheld as tax, resulting in the amount they received from the ministry on Tuesday night.

The settlement breathes a sigh of relief after the team had been involved in a row with the ministry ahead of the second leg clash against the Cleopatras.

Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side had earlier threatened to boycott the game against Egypt in Accra, having already missed two consecutive training sessions to intensify the quest for their demands.

The Queens eventually returned to training on the eve of the game after several meetings with key officials.

Despite the financial brouhaha, the team came out in full swing to thump Egypt and secure qualification to next year’s WAFCON with a 7-0 aggregate scoreline, having already won 3-0 in Ismailia.

The cheques were presented to the players at their base in Erata Hotel following the end of the game.

The Black Queens are expected to close camp on Wednesday, October 29, for their respective clubs and return late November ahead of the friendly game against England on December 2.
