Turkish football has been rocked by one of its biggest scandals in recent memory. The Turkish Football Federation TFF has confirmed that 152 referees including top-tier officials are under investigation for betting on football matches, in direct violation of federation regulations.
In official statement released on Monday , TFF president İbrahim Hacıosmanoglu announced that the federation will launch comprehensive disciplinary investigation into the matter.
“As of today, our disciplinary committee has begun the necessary proceedings. Sanctions will be issued soon and appropriate penalties will follow” said Hacıosmanoglu
According to the TFF’s internal audit, out of 571 registered referees overseeing professional competitions, 371 were found to have active betting accounts.
Among the 152 referees identified:
7 are first division referees,
15 are top level assistant referees,
And several others operate across lower professional divisions.
One referee alone reportedly placed bets on 18227 matches while 10 referees wagered on more than 10000 games each and 42 referees placed bets on over 1000 matches .. An astonishing revelation for the country’s officiating system.
