UDS make history as first African champions of World University Football Games

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has etched its name in history after winning the FISU World University Football Tournament.

This follows their dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in the final on Sunday.

The Ghanaian side had to dig deep after Gabriel Viera stunned them with a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the match.

But UDS refused to bow out, with captain Mohammed Sulemana striking late in injury time to level the score.

In extra time, Ezedeen Alhassan scored directly from a corner kick to seal a comeback to spark wild celebrations.

UDS’ journey to glory has been inspiring.

After a tense semi-final clash with Spain’s University of Granada ended goalless, the team held their nerve to triumph 5-4 on penalties, after heroics of goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo.

The victory is also a defining moment for African university football, as they become the continent’s first-ever winners of the prestigious competition
