The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has confirmed the death of Godfred Akomaning, a final-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.
In a statement released on March 24, the university said Akomaning passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
A medical report from the hospital identified the cause of death as organophosphate poisoning, a reaction to toxic chemical compounds commonly found in certain agricultural and industrial substances.
The student’s body has been deposited at the Sefwi Anwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.
UENR management expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and the wider university community, describing the loss as a profoundly painful moment for the institution.
The university also stated that investigations would be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public that updates would be provided once all facts are established.
UENR reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for both students and staff.
