US reverses visa restrictions on Ghana – Foreign Affairs Minister confirms

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the United States has reversed the visa restrictions previously imposed on Ghana.

In a post on his X account, Mr Ablakwa said Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges.

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, at a bilateral meeting earlier today, on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” he wrote.

The US imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and several other countries in July this year, limiting affected citizens to three-month, single-entry visas.

In Ghana’s case, the measure was justified by what US authorities said were high rates of visa overstays, particularly among students.

Mr Ablakwa said the reversal marks a return to “healthier and stronger Ghana-USA relations.”
