Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has called on Regional and District Directors of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to place greater emphasis on disaster prevention while reactivating volunteer groups to strengthen preparedness and response across the region.
He made the call at an Orientation and Engagement Programme for Regional and District NADMO Directors on the formation and reactivation of volunteer groups.
The meeting took place in the Conference Room of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.
Mr. Gunu described the engagement as a timely reminder of the need to strengthen disaster readiness in the Volta Region, which has recently suffered several disasters ranging from rainstorms to tidal waves.
He commended NADMO for its dedication and swift response during emergencies, saying the organisation’s commitment to protecting lives and property was “commendable and worthy of recognition.”
“I want to express my appreciation to NADMO for their dedication and responsiveness whenever disaster strikes. Their commitment is commendable, and I urge them to continue in this spirit of service,” the Minister said.
Mr. Gunu, however, stressed that beyond managing disasters after they occur, it was crucial for NADMO to anticipate risks and prepare ahead of time.
He therefore charged Regional and District Directors to intensify public education and sensitisation in communities, work closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure preventive measures were firmly in place.
According to him, prevention remained the most effective tool to minimise loss of life and property when disasters strike.
The Minister further highlighted the importance of environmental management, stressing the need for proper land use planning, protection of water bodies, tree planting, and responsible waste management as practical steps to reduce disaster risks.
He said early-warning systems and the reactivation of well-trained volunteer groups would also strengthen community resilience and improve response efforts during emergencies.
Mr. Gunu acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama’s recent sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a sea defence wall in Ketu South, describing it as a major intervention that would bring lasting relief from the perennial tidal waves affecting coastal communities.
“Together, with commitment and collaboration, we can safeguard our people and build a safer, more resilient Volta Region,” the Minister affirmed.
The Orientation and Engagement Programme brought together stakeholders to deliberate on practical ways of enhancing disaster preparedness, ensuring that volunteer groups are well-resourced, and promoting proactive strategies to protect lives and livelihoods.
