The Multimedia Group has honoured veteran broadcaster Tommy Annan-Forson, affectionately known as the “Godfather of Radio,” as part of activities marking Joy FM’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Led by Fiifi Koomson, General Manager for Joy Brands, a team from the Group paid a courtesy visit to Annan-Forson, presenting him with a commemorative cake and sharing memories of his immense contribution to Ghanaian broadcasting.
Fiifi Koomson described Annan-Forson as inseparable from the history of The Multimedia Group and Joy FM.
“The 30 years of Multimedia cannot be celebrated without mentioning Tommy’s name,” he said.
Celebrating a Mentor and Pioneer
Broadcasters, including Lexis Bill, host of Drive Time on Joy FM, and Kofi Hayford, host of Joy FM Overdrive and Weekend City Show, reflected on how Tommy Annan-Forson’s mentorship shaped their careers.
Lexis Bill recalled his very first training in broadcasting over 20 years ago:
“That training with you and Annette Thurman and the German Development Corporation was my formal introduction to what is right and what is wrong. Until today, I still remember almost everything you taught, including the jokes you shared. That was the bedrock of my journey in radio.”
Kofi Hayford, who also trained under Annan-Forson at the Rabodef Radio Academy, described him as a life-changing influence:
“Our paths crossed exactly 10 years ago. That was the beginning of my broadcasting career, and it has been nothing short of amazing. Uncle Tom, your spirit and the blessings that follow us continue to exude excellence.”
Tommy Annan-Forson, visibly delighted by the recognition, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. He recounted his early involvement with Joy FM’s founding and his pride at seeing the station thrive three decades on.
“It was a difficult journey to start, but once we got our feet on the ground we took off like a Concorde. I’m proud that Joy FM has stood very firm and very loyal to its listeners. I never expected this honour, but I feel great, and I thank you all sincerely.”
He also paid tribute to Multimedia Group’s founder and CEO, Kwasi Twum, for his vision and humility, adding that being recognised as one of the station’s “heroes” was a humbling milestone in his long career.
A Living Legacy
From pioneering country music shows to mentoring generations of broadcasters through Rabodef, Tommy Annan-Forson’s influence on Ghanaian media remains unmatched. His protégés continue to dominate Ghana’s airwaves, a testament to the values and professionalism he instilled.
As Joy FM celebrates 30 years of excellence, the visit to Annan-Forson was both a homecoming and a reminder that the story of private radio in Ghana cannot be told without his name.
