A 26-year-old man is in police custody after an alleged bold daytime attempt to steal an armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Ebenezer Frimpong, was arrested following a dramatic pursuit involving a SWAT team of seven officers along the Abuakwa–Kumasi stretch.
According to a police situational report cited by myjoyonline.com, the incident happened around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

A service driver, Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), was reportedly transporting an armoured vehicle with registration number GP 1131 from Nkawie to the Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for servicing.
According to police, upon reaching an area near the Nkawie Market, the officer parked the vehicle to purchase medication at a nearby pharmacy, reportedly leaving the engine running.
It was during this brief moment that suspect Frimpong, who was passing by, allegedly took advantage of the situation, jumped into the driver’s seat, and sped off with the armoured vehicle, leaving both bystanders and the officer in shock.
An alarm was immediately raised, triggering a rapid response from the Ashanti Regional Police Command. A SWAT patrol team led by Inspector Benjamin Nartey, and made up of seven tactical officers, was deployed to intercept the stolen vehicle.
The chase ended about 30 minutes later at Mim near Abuakwa, where the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Ebenezer Frimpong, was arrested.
The armoured vehicle has since been secured as an exhibit, while Frimpong remains in custody at the Abuakwa District Police Command.
He has since been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department to assist with ongoing investigations.
