Accra is set to host a showcase of youthful ingenuity as the 6th Energy Commission Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge reaches its climax on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
At 9:30 a.m., the Grand Finale will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre, where six schools will compete for the ultimate prize.
Since its launch in 2019, the Challenge has engaged 593 schools nationwide, inspiring a new generation of climate-conscious thinkers and innovators. This year alone, 120 schools showcased their creativity, with 15 progressing to the zonal stage.
From there, six outstanding teams booked their place in the national finals: Dabokpa Technical Institute, Ola Girls’ SHS (Kenyasi), Damango SHS, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon (PRESEC), Adidome SHS, and Ahantaman Girls’ SHS.
Held under the theme “Sustainable Energy for a Healthier Future”, the zonal stage saw bold, community-driven solutions addressing food security, waste management, and health delivery.
Ola Girls’ SHS impressed with Beds Care, a wind-powered rice-bed management system designed to irrigate crops while deterring birds. Damango SHS showcased a recyclable system converting food waste into biodegradable plastics, while Dabokpa Technical Institute presented an intelligent solar-powered incubator to save newborn lives in rural clinics.
PRESEC-Legon emerged Southern Zonal Champions with HealthPot, an AI-driven, solar-powered self-service health check station.
Adidome SHS displayed their Waste Segregation Smart Dustbin, while Ahantaman Girls’ SHS introduced the Royal Vaccine Cooler, a solar-powered device to preserve vaccines in rural areas.
Addressing participants at the zonal competition, Mrs Eunice A. Biritwum, Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, urged finalists to embrace the national stage with confidence. “Dear students, this is your moment to shine. Present your work with confidence and passion. Ghana and the world are watching,” she encouraged.
The Challenge is organised by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana TVET Service, and CSIR, with support from GIZ, Ashesi University, Volta River Authority (VRA), Greenfield Ambassadors, Star Oil, and PURC.
With Southern and Northern champions confirmed, anticipation is mounting. The Grand Finale promises an electrifying display of innovation, teamwork, and the transformative potential of renewable energy to improve lives across Ghana.
