The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has accused the government of orchestrating a deliberate plan to deploy state institutions against political opponents.
In an interview on Joy FM‘s Top Story on Monday, after the party filed petitions with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and President John Dramani Mahama, Nana B said the NPP has “a lot of grounded evidence” to back claims of selective justice and politically motivated prosecutions.
“We have evidence to substantiate the claim that there is a deliberate attempt to put together state institutions to weaponise them to go after political opponents,” he said.
The petitions come in the wake of the controversial arrest and remand of Kwame Baffoe, alias Abronye DC, the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, who was charged with offensive conduct and publishing false news. His detention sparked widespread protest by the party’s youth wing, who argue that the law is being applied as a political weapon.
According to Mr Boakye, the unfair application of the law has become glaring in recent months. He pointed to cases where NPP members charged with misdemeanours were detained for days under harsh conditions, while individuals aligned with the ruling party faced no consequences for equally or more serious offences.
He cited the detention of an NPP member whose charges, he argued, did not warrant lengthy custody. “The charges levelled against him were just misdemeanors. However, he was in police custody for nearly a week. Meanwhile, someone who committed the same offense was paraded in handcuffs, with his image splashed across social media. This imbalance is what we are talking about,” he explained.
Nana B also referred to a National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication officer who allegedly threatened to kill three NPP leaders, including himself, during the Akwatia by-election. “As we speak, he has not been arrested. Yet when it comes to NPP members, the law is applied with full force,” he stressed.
He further recalled an incident at Ridge Hospital where a man allegedly stormed the facility and created panic, but was not subjected to the same swift punitive action as seen with NPP members.
