Body of 18-year-old Ghanaian student who died in Latvia returned to Ghana

LThe body of 18-year-old Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia, has been sent back to Ghana for burial, following his death under suspicious circumstances in Latvia, a report from citinewsroom.com has said.

Nana Agyei, a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University, died on June 4, 2025, after reportedly falling from the sixth floor of his apartment building on Baznicas Street in Riga, according to Latvian authorities.

He had enrolled at the university in July 2024.

However, his family has strongly disputed the official account.

Just three days before his death, Nana Agyei is said to have sent a troubling voice note to relatives, claiming he had been poisoned.

Due to that, the family believes this message points to foul play and has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

“We received news that he fell from the sixth floor and died. But we said, no, that cannot be true. There’s no way he would commit suicide.

“I wrote letters to the foreign ministry, to the school, and contacted the police. But we realised the police were not responding and appeared to be covering up because the people involved were Latvian nationals,” said Sarah Nimli, a family spokesperson.

Frustrated by the lack of transparency surrounding the death of their son, the family of Nana Agyei Oduru Ahyia sent a relative to Latvia to pursue answers firsthand.

The relative was later joined by a representative from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin which oversees diplomatic affairs in Latvia, to engage with local authorities.

Although Latvian police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, the family claims they have received no formal updates or meaningful cooperation from either Latvian officials or Ghana’s diplomatic mission, deepening their concerns and grief, the report added.
