Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed the governments unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining, terming the effort as a marathon, not a sprint.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Buah acknowledged the challenges facing the anti-galamsey campaign but insisted the government remains focused and determined to restore order and sustainability in Ghanas mining sector.
Let me make it clear that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is under no illusion that the fight against illegal mining is an easy one. We know that it is a marathon and not a sprint. We will definitely prevail in the end. I am very sure about that, he said.
He stressed that the government is not against mining but is committed to promoting responsible and sustainable practices in the sector.
We are clearly focused on ensuring that we win. We are also not against mining at all. In fact, we are doing everything possible to encourage responsible, sustainable mining, he said.
Providing updates on the intensified clampdown on illegal mining, Buah revealed that 425 excavators and other mining equipment have been seized nationwide.
The Forestry Commission, which has been actively supporting the operation, also confiscated a range of machinery including 177 excavators, 4 bulldozers, 12 vehicles, 43 motorcycles, 155 pumping machines, 184 changfangs, 15 gold detectors, and 10 heavy-duty generators.
He reiterated the governments tough stance on illegal and irresponsible mining.
We have drawn a line in the sand, and we will fight against irresponsible, reckless mining activities in any form, he emphasised.
Buah also credited President John Dramani Mahamas strong political will and backing as instrumental to the progress made so far.
He assured Ghanaians that the government will continue to work towards restoring the countrys natural environment.
We will ensure that our water bodies are turned blue, our forests are turned green, and our environment is restored and preserved for posterity, he said.
