The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has petitioned the National Youth Authority (NYA) to intervene in what it describes as persistent harassment and extortion of its members by officers of the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Tesano.
In a letter dated October 27, 2025, the General Secretary of the union, Abugri Timothy Agengri, said several motorcycle couriers have recently been arrested and detained without cause, with their motorcycles allegedly impounded without following due process.
According to him, the situation has not only disrupted their livelihoods but is also affecting courier and delivery services relied on by many Ghanaians.
“Our members have been subjected to incessant harassment, intimidation, and extortion,” the statement read. “Some of our members are being arbitrarily arrested, detained, and their motorcycles impounded without due process. This treatment is unfair and unjustified.”
The union is therefore requesting three key actions:
First, it wants an immediate halt to what it calls the “harassment” of motorcycle couriers by the MTTD. Second, it is calling for the establishment of a committee to investigate the ongoing issues between motorcyclists and the Tesano MTTD Unit.
The proposed committee, the union suggests, should include representatives from MCUG, the Police Service, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and fairness.
Finally, the union is urging that the findings and recommendations from such a committee be implemented to prevent further occurrences and promote better cooperation between the police and courier riders.
MCUG insists that its members operate within legal guidelines and play an essential role in Ghana’s growing delivery and logistics sector.
The union argues that continued confrontations with police officers threaten both their safety and economic survival.
“We believe that your office is well-positioned to facilitate a resolution to this matter and ensure that the rights of our members are protected,” Agengri noted, expressing hope that the NYA will act swiftly to prevent escalation.
The National Youth Authority is yet to respond publicly to the petition.
