
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun piloting a digital system to improve how its field officers capture and manage maintenance data, in what the utility describes as a major step toward operational efficiency and better customer service.
Acting Operations Manager, Ing. Godwin Ahorlu, said the initiative — which involves using tablets to record faults and monitor performance — will enhance accuracy, speed, and accountability in field reporting.
“This digital approach will enable field teams to record, analyse, and share maintenance information in real time, making it easier to plan interventions, respond faster to network issues, and ensure greater accountability,” Ing. Ahorlu noted.
The initiative forms part of ECG’s Network Maintenance System (NMS), being piloted under the company’s Operations Directorate. The pilot began with a two-day training workshop held on October 27 and 28, 2025, at the ECG Boadi Office in the Ashanti Region.
Field engineers and technicians from four operational districts and the Ashanti Sub-Transmission region participated in hands-on sessions that combined in-house instructions with practical field demonstrations. They were trained in fault logging, maintenance tracking, and performance monitoring using the new tablets.
According to Ing. Ahorlu, the NMS aligns with global best practices in utility management and is part of ECG’s broader strategy to modernise its operations through digital transformation.
“The new system will not only improve data collection but also reduce downtime, enhance fault resolution, and promote data-driven decision-making,” he added.
The company says the successful implementation of the pilot will pave the way for a nationwide rollout across all operational areas. The move is expected to strengthen ECG’s maintenance planning processes and improve service delivery for millions of customers.
ECG has in recent years intensified efforts to modernise its operations through automation, remote monitoring systems, and customer service reforms aimed at improving reliability and reducing technical losses across its network.
