The Ministry of Defence has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of six lives in a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.
Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Wednesday, he assured the public of the ministry’s full support for those affected.
“The Ministry of Defence deeply mourns the loss of lives and extends condolences to the affected families.
“We are working closely with the Ghana Armed Forces, medical teams, and law enforcement agencies to provide full support to the injured and to investigate the circumstances that led to this incident,” Dr. Forson stated.
He noted that the safety and dignity of all applicants remain a top priority, adding that the ministry will take every necessary step to prevent a recurrence of such a tragic event.

Meanwhile, President John Mahama has directed the GAF to suspend its ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise following reports of injuries and deaths recorded in Accra and Kumasi.
He said the temporary halt would allow for a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that future recruitment processes are conducted under safer and more controlled conditions.
