NPP supporters protest over continued detention of former BOST MD Provencal

Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters have gathered at the Accra High Court on Wednesday to protest the continued detention of the former Managing Director of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), Edwin Alfred Provencal.

The supporters argue that Mr Provencal has met all the bail conditions set by the court, yet the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has refused to release him.

They describe the situation as unconstitutional and accuse the investigative body of acting in bad faith.

Speaking to JoyNews, one supporter said, “He is still at EOCO, and the court is waiting for his release, but EOCO is still keeping him there.”

Another added, “…You have given him charges nobody understands. We have done everything you asked. The court has granted him bail, now bring him to court, and you are refusing.”

The demonstrations come as the former BOST MD is expected to appear before the Accra High Court today, Wednesday.

The supporters, who arrived as early as 8 a.m., expressed optimism that he would be released after spending eight days in EOCO custody.

On Tuesday, an Accra Human Rights Court reviewed Provencal’s bail conditions, reducing the initial GH¢60 million bail sum to GH¢30 million with two sureties.

Provencal was arrested on November 10 at the Kotoka International Airport while preparing to travel to Maputo. He is facing allegations of causing financial loss to the state in connection with the government’s Gold for Oil programme.
