2025/26 GPL: Kotoko leaves it late to beat Young Apostles

Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways on Wednesday afternoon with a late 2–1 triumph over Young Apostles in their outstanding Week 6 Premier League match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The victory ends a frustrating two-game spell without a win for the Porcupine Warriors in the 2025/26 season.

Kotoko controlled the early proceedings, dictating tempo and spending long spells in the visitors’ half. Despite carving out several openings, they failed to find the finishing touch, while Young Apostles’ disciplined defensive shape ensured the first half ended without a goal.

The breakthrough arrived six minutes into the second half when Hubert Gyau unleashed a brilliant effort to hand Kotoko a deserved lead. But their celebration barely settled.

Young Apostles hit back almost immediately, with Richmond Opoku rising above the defence to nod home a well-worked equaliser just three minutes later.

The leveller breathed intensity into the contest, turning it into an open, energetic clash with both sides chasing the winner. Kotoko, however, showed greater urgency and continued to pile on the pressure.

Their persistence was finally rewarded in stoppage time. Captain Samba O’Neil calmly dispatched a late penalty, sparking jubilation among the home fans and sealing an important three points.

The result pushes Kotoko up to fifth on the league table with 19 points—just two adrift of the summit—with a game in hand still to be played.
