Mahama announces new clean-beaches initiative with monthly allowances for workers

President John Mahama has announced that the government will soon launch a new national initiative aimed at keeping the country’s beaches clean.

According to him, young people will be recruited and placed on a monthly allowance to maintain coastal areas.

He was speaking at the National Conference of Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers on World Fisheries Day 2025, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, November 21.

President Mahama said the programme will directly involve the fishing community and offer employment opportunities while improving sanitation along the coastline.

“We are also going to launch an initiative for clean beaches, and so the fishers are going to be involved,” he said.

“We’re going to employ people to clean the beaches and make sure that our beaches are clean. You can give us your children, we’ll employ them to help clean the beaches for us, and we’ll pay them a monthly allowance.”

The President explained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to support the fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.

He also announced that the government will establish two new fish markets in the Oti and Central Regions, adding that the request for a Greater Accra fish market will receive favourable consideration.

According to him, these new interventions are designed to modernise the value chain, boost economic activity in fishing communities and strengthen Ghana’s fisheries sector.
