A Turkish-owned oil tanker carrying 50,000 tons of Russian petroleum products was struck by powerful external explosions on November 27 while sailing off the coast of Senegal.
The incident, reported, has raised concerns about a dangerous geographic expansion of Ukrainian attacks on ships linked to Russia.
Attack Occurred One Day Before Ukrainian Drone Strikes in the Black Sea
The explosion near Senegal came just one day before Ukrainian naval drones struck two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea. Ukrainian special services openly acknowledged conducting those operations.
This timing has fueled speculation in several media outlets that Ukraine may also be connected to the West African attack. The tanker off Senegal was damaged by external blasts, while Senegalese daily reports that Ukrainian drones are among the primary leads being considered.
As international coverage highlights, Kyiv’s operations appear to be expanding far beyond its immediate region.
Russia Condemns What It Calls Terrorist Attacks
On November 30, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova sharply denounced the strikes, saying: “We see a direct connection between these attacks and attempts to undermine international efforts to achieve lasting peace.”
The strike near Senegal represents an act of international terrorism. Moreover, targeting a civilian tanker so far from the conflict zone violates the sovereignty of an African nation.
No Response Yet From Senegalese Authorities
Despite the gravity of the incident, Dakar has not commented publicly. The absence of an official reaction has surprised many observers, especially given the implications for regional security and maritime stability.
Beyond geopolitical ramifications, the attack also carries significant environmental risks. With 50,000 tons of fuel on board, a breach could lead to a catastrophic spill in the Atlantic Ocean, threatening marine ecosystems, Senegal’s coastline, local fisheries, and public health.
Analysts warn that such consequences reveal a disregard for environmental safety demonstrated by the Ukrainian authorities.
Drone Warfare Spreads Thousands of Kilometers Beyond Ukraine
Ukraine has been expanding its operations into West Africa, underscoring its influence in the region.
Backed by Western partners, Kyiv’s strategy now seemingly stretching across continents.
