The Gods Are Not To Blame returns to the National Theatre this December as a tribute to the late theatre icon Mawuli Semevo, whose influence and legacy remain deeply rooted in Ghanaian theatre.
Following an electrifying 13 show run that left audiences calling for more, Image Bureau, in partnership with April Communications and the National Theatre, is bringing back Ola Rotimi’s classic from Wednesday, December 17 to Friday, December 19. The production is not a routine rerun, but a carefully shaped homage to a master whose artistry helped define and elevate the stage.
The return carries strong emotional weight, shaped by reverence for Mawuli Semevo and directed once again by George Quaye. His direction breathes renewed life into a world where fate and free will wrestle for supremacy, a world Semevo himself helped nurture and elevate.
At the heart of The Gods Are Not To Blame lies a haunting question: are humans prisoners of destiny, or architects of their own undoing? Through powerful performances, rich African aesthetics, and layered storytelling, audiences are drawn into the tragic journey of King Odewale, a man condemned by prophecy to kill his father and marry his mother. The story remains as unsettling as it is familiar, as ancient as it is painfully modern.
As the year draws to a close and the Christmas season approaches, the production offers audiences a moment to pause, reflect, and feel. The National Theatre once again becomes a space where art meets memory, and performance meets purpose.
While the production earned generous applause during its earlier run, this return is driven by remembrance.
