The Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit has announced that it is investigating a robbery involving a delivery rider in Tantra Hill, Accra.
The arrest follows a disturbing incident that occurred on Thursday, 11th December 2025, when a courier rider was attacked and robbed by two armed men during a delivery.
According to the police, the rider had received a delivery request from an eatery in Achimota to a location at Tantra Hill.
Upon arriving at the destination, he was confronted by two men on a motorbike. One of the suspects, armed with a machete, struck the rider on the back with the blunt end of the weapon, threatening to kill him if he resisted.
Fearing for his life, the rider attempted to protect his motorbike and Samsung A05 mobile phone, which were forcibly taken from him during the attack. The victim sustained injuries to his left hand and later reported the robbery to the police.
Following swift investigations, personnel from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit were able to track down the suspect.
On Friday, 12th December 2025, the police arrested Akwesi Atanzumi, a 29-year-old man, at Agbogbloshie, where he was attempting to sell the stolen motorbike.
During questioning, Atanzumi confessed to his involvement in the robbery and named an accomplice, Shadrach, who is currently on the run.
The police confirmed that the stolen motorbike had been recovered and is now being retained as evidence for ongoing investigations. The search for Atanzumi’s accomplice, Shadrach, is currently underway, with the authorities promising to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to apprehend him.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, December 23, Ms Juliana Obeng, Superintendent of Police and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, assured the public that the police are committed to combating violent crime and ensuring the safety of citizens, particularly delivery riders who are often vulnerable to such attacks.
She further emphasised the importance of community involvement in crime prevention, urging the public to report any suspicious individuals or activities that could lead to the prevention of similar incidents.
With Atanzumi now in custody, police are continuing their investigations, which include tracking down his accomplice, Shadrach, and determining if the suspects are involved in other criminal activities.
The police have also called on the public to assist with information that may help in identifying other potential suspects or locating Shadrach.
The Accra Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining security across the region, especially as incidents of robbery and violent crime continue to raise concerns among residents and business owners.
The police are urging delivery riders, as well as the general public, to take extra precautions to safeguard their belongings. Riders are advised to avoid carrying large sums of money or valuable items that could make them targets for criminals.
