Administrative Manager of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Oduro Nyarko, has defended the decision to award Bibiani GoldStars the Top Four title over Accra Hearts of Oak, even though both sides finished with equal points.
Speaking on Luv FM, Mr. Nyarko emphasized that the tournament’s format follows the existing Ghana Premier League tiebreaking system, which prioritizes head-to-head results when teams are level on points.
According to him, changing the criteria mid-competition would compromise the tournament’s integrity and open the door for abuse.
“Currently, that is the situation in the GFA. If two teams tie on points at the end of the league, they will not use goals. They will use head-to-head.
“We are learning from our past mistakes. And so, the GFA wanted us to shift from that practise and go to the head-to-head. So that, when we tie, they will look at the two teams, who beat who when they met. And that is simpler.
“Rather than adopt the goal system where we abuse it. You know, this goal system is used in Europe, but we have a different mindset here in Ghana,” he said.
