KNUST’s Esquire Bedels, long central to its traditions, are celebrated in a new book launch
Titled The KNUST Esquire Bedels and authored by Assistant Registrar and Head of Digital Communications at the University Relations Office, Emmanuel Kwasi Debrah, the book is the first of its kind to comprehensively document the role of the ceremonial officials who are often seen leading academic processions with maces and regalia.
The publication explores how Esquire Bedels have helped preserve the dignity of KNUST’s academic culture, while also providing a rich resource for the University’s archives.
Speaking at the virtual launch, Mr. Debrah explained his motivation for the book: “For years, the Esquire Bedels have walked before us at congregations, yet very little was recorded about their role. This book is my modest contribution to preserving their story, ensuring that future generations understand the symbolism and heritage they hold.”
Now available in both eBook and paperback, the book offers the wider public and academic community fresh insights into an often-overlooked aspect of university life.
