Manchester United claim priceless win after early Sanchez red card

Manchester United claim priceless win after early Sanchez red card

Manchester United capitalised on Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card to secure a crucial victory over Chelsea in torrential rain at Old Trafford.

The first match in Premier League history to see two or more goals, red cards and substitutions in the first half was settled by goals from United skipper Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, who was the other player sent off before the break.

It was Sanchez’s dismissal that set the course of the game though.

The Spain international raced from his goal to meet Bryan Mbeumo as the striker ran beyond the Chelsea defence.

Sanchez then upended the forward outside his area rather than allow him past to tap the ball into an empty net.

Enzo Maresca’s response to the red card was to take off both Pedro Neto and Estevao Willian and, as Cole Palmer had to be replaced after suffering a recurrence of a groin injury, Chelsea had lost three attacking players in the space of 20 minutes.

Trevor Chalobah pulled one back for Chelsea with a header 10 minutes from time but United kept their nerves at bay to make it to the final whistle with their lead intact.

The victory was United’s second of the season and came in front of minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who gave head coach Ruben Amorim assurances over his future 48 hours earlier.

It also means Chelsea have still not won at Old Trafford since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was United manager.

Mahama reveals government support for clubs ahead 2025/26 GPL season

Mahama reveals government support for clubs ahead 2025/26 GPL season

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that government provided support to clubs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) ahead of the 2025/26 season, confirming long-held speculation about the source of the GHC1 million given to each of the 18 top-flight sides.

Speaking during Asante Kotoko and Bibiani GoldStars’ visit to the Jubilee House on Saturday, September 21, ahead of their CAF inter-club matches, the President revealed that the intervention was part of government’s broader plan to strengthen sports financing.

“Aside from that, as a token, at the start of the Premier [League], we have managed to give every club something. It’s a start. I’m sure the fund will grow,” Mahama said.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) had earlier attributed the GHC1m support to its production partnership with Adesa Production.

GFA President Kurt Okraku, along with General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo and Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, consistently insisted the source of the funds is the partnership with Adesa Production.

However, Mahama’s comments appear to confirm the long-running media reports that state support was behind the gesture.

The President explained that government’s renewed prioritisation of sports is made possible by its fiscal discipline and commitment to reducing wasteful expenditure.

“Like Kurt said, we’ve agreed that with all the savings we are making in terms of expenditure, we’re cutting down expenditure, we’ve cut down the size of government, we’re avoiding waste of our national resources. It frees up more resources for us to invest in the things that are important, and sports is one of them,” he stated.

He stressed that investing in football is not only about improving performance but also about strengthening national unity.

“The good thing about sports, and especially football, is that it unites us… supporters of Kotoko are Dagatis, they are Dagombes, they are Ashantis, they are Fantis… and it is the football that brings us all together. So if we put money into sports and into football, we’re putting money into building a united country,” he said.

Mahama concluded by highlighting the importance of a strong domestic league for the development of the Black Stars, saying a competitive GPL would help nurture more talent for the national team.

“And that is not resources that have been wasted. But also, when you have a strong domestic league, it reflects in your international assignments, especially with the Black Stars, because you are the primary source for players into the Black Stars.

“So if we support the domestic league and it’s competitive, it will breed more talents and the Black Stars will benefit from those talents and be able to also represent Ghana abroad.”

Private sector urged to support Ghana’s agricultural growth at Agritech West Africa 2025

Private sector urged to support Ghana’s agricultural growth at Agritech West Africa 2025

The Government of Ghana is urging increased private sector involvement in agricultural development efforts, particularly in support of national policies such as the Feed Ghana programme.

The call was made during the opening of the 4th edition of the Agritech West Africa exhibition, held in Accra, as part of a broader push to accelerate growth and sustainability in the country’s agriculture sector.

The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and exhibitors from around the world, with participating countries including India, Turkey, Nigeria, Ghana, China, Spain, the UK, Italy, and France.

The exhibition showcased a diverse array of products and solutions, ranging from agrochemicals and modern agricultural technologies to irrigation systems, biofeeds, food processing and packaging innovations, and value-added food and beverage products.

Organized as a hub for agricultural innovation and trade, Agritech West Africa 2025 highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration and private investment in driving the sector forward. It also served as a platform for stakeholders to explore opportunities to enhance food production, adopt sustainable practices, and expand agribusiness operations across the region.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Director in charge of Crops Services at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture Harry Bleppony emphasized that private sector participation is critical to the success of initiatives aimed at improving food security, boosting productivity, and reducing the country’s reliance on food imports.

“The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is spearheading government’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda through its flagship Feed Ghana Programme. The programme has the objective of ensuring national food security, promotion of value addition, increasing raw material supply to agro-processing industries and expanding agricultural exports. This will require public private and public-private investments”, he said.

Project Director of Agritech West Africa at Synergice Events, Thomas James said the exhibition provides an avenue for players in the industry to find ways to enhance its growth.

“The event is very much in line with the development goals of the Ghana government’s commitment to value-added agriculture to the national economy and targeted food security”, he mentioned.

The presence and commitment of international partners, such as India, further underscored the strategic importance of global partnerships in supporting Ghana’s agricultural tr
