Ghana Volleyball Shines at 2026 CAVB Zone III Championship

Ghana’s rising prominence in West African volleyball was on full display as Ghana Army Volleyball Club and Kalibi Volleyball Club shone at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship, held at the Borteyman Sports Complex from 1–10 March 2026.

The Accra-hosted tournament featured 32 elite clubs from seven West African nations, marking a historic level of participation for African club volleyball and underscoring the sport’s steady growth in Ghana.

On the court, Ghanaian teams dominated. Ghana Army Volleyball Club clinched the men’s title with a straight-sets victory over Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club, finishing 25–21, 25–21, 25–23.

In the women’s division, Kalibi Volleyball Club impressed with a commanding 3–0 win against Nigeria’s Vipers Volleyball Club, taking the sets 25–15, 25–16, 25–13 to lift the championship trophy.

These victories highlight Ghana’s growing influence in regional volleyball and signal the country’s potential to become a powerhouse in West African club competitions.

The championship’s historic scale drew several high-profile dignitaries, highlighting its importance for volleyball development across Africa. Notably, Bouchra Hajij, President of the Confederation of African Volleyball, attended, underscoring the tournament’s continental significance.

The event also enjoyed strong backing from the Government of Ghana and key sporting institutions. Professor Francis Dodoo represented the Chief of Staff, while the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, attended to demonstrate government support for the sport.

Other notable attendees included Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, and Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority. Senior officers and generals from various Ghanaian security services were also present, lending their support and adding prestige to the championship.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, praised the strides made by Ghana volleyball and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable sports development through the Sports Fund.

“We are impressed with the achievements of Ghana volleyball. It reflects the President’s dedication to supporting the growth of all sports in the country. This is precisely why the Sports Fund was established—to provide sustainable backing for sports development,” Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams said.

While celebrating these successes, stakeholders stress that greater corporate investment will be vital for sustaining the sport’s momentum. Enhanced sponsorship, stronger club support, and expanded grassroots programs are essential to ensure Ghana can consistently compete at the highest levels in Africa.

With improving infrastructure, a growing pool of talented players, and strong performances in international tournaments such as the Zone III Championship, Ghana is steadily emerging as a rising powerhouse of volleyball in West Africa.
