Ghana’s Embassy in Rome Marks 69 Years of Independence with Vibrant Celebrations

The Embassies of Ghana in Rome and the Vatican City marked the country’s 69th Independence Day with a vibrant three-day celebration held from 6 to 8 March 2026.

The event showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, celebrated its national achievements, and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to international cooperation and economic development.

Organised under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” the programme drew participation from officials of the Italy, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, as well as Ghanaian nationals and friends of Ghana.

The celebrations began on 6 March with an opening ceremony at the Rome Cavalieri Hotel. The event featured remarks from Mona‑Helen Kabuki Quartey, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Italian Republic, and Ben Assorow, Ghana’s Ambassador to the Holy See.

In their addresses, the two diplomats reflected on Ghana’s journey since independence, highlighting the country’s political and economic progress as well as the important role played by the Ghanaian diaspora in supporting national development. Their remarks set the tone for the celebrations that followed.

Following the opening ceremonies, a business forum was held to position Ghana as a prime destination for investment and international partnerships. Discussions focused on key sectors, including agriculture, agribusiness, ICT, infrastructure, and services. Italian companies already operating in Ghana, alongside representatives from both the public and private sectors, shared success stories and explored opportunities for future collaboration. Notable participants included BF International and AVASSAC, a cassava processing company.

On Saturday, 7 March 2026, a lively trade fair took place at the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). The fair showcased Ghanaian textiles, traditional music, dance, and storytelling, offering visitors a vibrant taste of the country’s cultural richness. Attendees also enjoyed displays of Ghanaian arts, crafts, fashion, and culinary traditions, creating an immersive experience that highlighted the nation’s diverse artistic and cultural heritage.

The three-day Independence Day celebrations concluded on Sunday, 8 March 2026, with an interreligious prayer and thanksgiving service at the official residence of the Ghanaian Ambassador. The service offered thanks for the success of the event, celebrated the leadership and governance of the Ghanaian mission, and honoured the contributions of Ghanaian diaspora in Italy.
