Ghanaians Worse Off Now Than in 2024 — Awal Mohammed Claims

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Awal Mohammed, has argued that Ghanaians are worse off now than they were in 2024, despite recent claims of economic improvement.

His remarks follow comments by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, who said the economy is stabilising faster than expected, with key indicators showing improvement across several sectors.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on March 17, Mr Mohammed criticised the government and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for highlighting what he described as selective statistics that do not reflect the everyday experiences of citizens.

“The NDC and the government can celebrate all these statistics, but the reality on the ground does not support them. The Ghanaian is worse off today than in 2024,” he said.

Mr Mohammed argued that while officials often point to figures such as inflation and exchange rates, they tend to overlook other critical indicators, including construction, capital expenditure, and the services sector.

He noted that the construction sector contracted by 4% in 2025, while industry growth slowed significantly from 11.1% in 2024 to 0.8% as of September last year, citing the 2026 budget.

He also raised concerns about capital expenditure, stating that only 34% of funds allocated for growth-driving projects were released.

“They will celebrate the statistics that favour them, but those that do not — especially the ones that could drive economic growth — are often ignored,” he added.
