Centre-back Patric Pfeiffer has been named in Ghana’s Black Stars squad for the upcoming international break, part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars are set to face Austria and Germany in late March, in one of the three remaining international windows before the tournament kicks off. Pfeiffer is among four new call-ups as head coach continues to assess his options ahead of the World Cup.
Here are five key things to know about the new addition:
1. Developed in Germany’s disciplined system
Pfeiffer came through Hamburger SV and made his mark at Darmstadt 98, helping them secure promotion to the Bundesliga. Most of his career has been spent in Germany, with a loan move to Young Boys in Switzerland as the only exception.
2. Former Germany youth international
Before committing to Ghana, Pfeiffer represented Germany at U18 and U19 levels, regularly featuring for their youth teams early in his career. He switched allegiance to Ghana in 2022.
3. A towering presence in defence
Standing at 1.96m, Pfeiffer brings the physical authority of a classic centre-back. He dominates aerial duels, an asset Ghana will rely on, especially following the injury to Mohammed Salisu.
4. Received Ghanaian passport in 2024
Although he declared for Ghana ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Pfeiffer only obtained his Ghanaian passport in 2024, clearing the final administrative hurdle that delayed his eligibility to play for the Black Stars.
5. Experience in top-flight European football
With Bundesliga exposure and European loan experience, Pfeiffer adds valuable defensive depth and tactical awareness, boosting Ghana’s backline ahead of crucial pre-World Cup fixtures.
