The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has dismantled a suspected highway robbery syndicate, arresting 12 individuals believed to be behind a series of violent attacks across the region and neighbouring areas.
The suspects were picked up in coordinated operations carried out on March 12 and 14, 2026, in towns including Offinso, Nkenkaasu, Akomadan, Techiman and Sunyani. The exercise involved collaboration between the regional command and the Surveillance Unit of the Ghana Police Service Intelligence Directorate in Accra.
Addressing the media at the Regional Police Headquarters in Asante Mampong on March 19, Ashanti North Regional Commander Felix Apedo said the suspects are linked to a string of armed robberies targeting motorists on major highways.
Among those arrested are Seidu Fuseini, also known as Baali, an ex-convict released in 2022; 22-year-old Dramani Rasak, who is currently on bail in connection with a murder case in Kumasi; Moro Yakubu, alias Dogo, another ex-convict; and Ibrahim Issiaka, 28, also known as Jaaji, who reportedly escaped from police custody in Jaima.
Police say a cache of weapons was retrieved during the operation, including three locally manufactured shotguns, a pistol, nine live BB cartridges, cutlasses, a sword and knives. Officers also seized 41 mobile phones—some already identified by victims—along with phone accessories, hooded clothing, and a bag believed to have been used to conceal the weapons.
Investigators linked the group to a February 23 robbery on the Nsuta–Hwidiem Old Junction Road, where armed men attacked motorists at dawn and made away with cash and valuables. The syndicate is also suspected to be behind an earlier attack on a VIP bus carrying 49 passengers along the Nkenkaasu–Darso stretch of the Kumasi–Techiman highway, during which two women sustained gunshot injuries.
Police further disclosed that the suspects were planning another robbery along the Akomadan–Darso road on March 14, but the plot was foiled following their arrest.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to several other crimes, including robberies along the Mampong–Ejura road, incidents in Offinso Kokoti and Wenchi during the 2025 Sallah festivities, as well as a cattle theft case in Buipe in the Northern Region. They are also believed to have been involved in a previous confrontation with police in Obuasi that resulted in the death of one of their accomplices.
ACP Apedo said efforts are ongoing to track down two additional suspects still at large, and urged the public to support the police with credible information to help curb armed robbery in the region.
