World Water Day 2026: AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine Brings Safe Water to Three Communities

Communities in Sampsonkrom, Ewiase, and New Nsuta–Emuye are set to benefit from improved access to safe and reliable drinking water following the completion of a major water infrastructure project by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.

The Construction and Mechanization of Water Supply Systems project, implemented under the Mine’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), reflects a broader commitment to sustainable infrastructure, community development, and inclusive governance.

Executed by Watersan Engineers Limited, the project involved geophysical surveys, borehole drilling, construction of water wells, and mechanization of water systems to ensure a sustainable groundwater supply.

Each community now has modern water facilities, including mechanized boreholes, submersible pumps, elevated tank stands, 40,000-litre storage tanks, and distribution networks connected to five strategically placed standpipes. The systems operate on a pump-and-store mechanism, where water is pumped into elevated tanks and distributed by gravity, ensuring consistent pressure and efficient service delivery.

The project builds on similar initiatives launched in 2025 in Diawuosu, Kokoteasua, and Sanso, reinforcing the Mine’s ongoing efforts to expand access to potable water across its host communities.

The new water systems were officially handed over during a ceremony on March 18, 2026, coinciding with World Water Day, themed “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.”

As part of the celebrations, the Mine also hosted a World Water Day conference, bringing together stakeholders in water resource management to discuss sustainable and efficient water use.

Speaking at the event, George Owusu Ansah, the Mine’s Director of Environment, stressed the importance of collaboration. “The commitment of government, traditional authorities, industry players, and community members is critical to safeguarding water resources and ensuring their sustainable use,” he said.

Awards were also presented to pupils of Apitikooko School who excelled in a World Water Day essay competition, highlighting the role of youth in promoting water conservation.

The initiative underscores AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine’s continued dedication to improving lives through sustainable development interventions, while promoting equitable access to essential resources like clean water.
