The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced a major upward adjustment in the monthly allowances paid to paramount chiefs and queen mothers across the country.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 20, he revealed that the allowance has been increased from GH¢1,000 to GH¢3,000 in 2025.
He explained that prior to the current administration, traditional leaders had been receiving GH¢1,000 monthly under the previous government, a figure that remained unchanged for several years.
“The ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has increased the allowance of paramount chiefs from GH¢1,000 to GH¢3,000. For the past eight years, our chiefs were on the same allowance of GH¢1,000. In 2025, the President approved a 300% increase, and the same increment applies to paramount queen mothers,” he said.
According to the Minister, the adjustment reflects government’s recognition of the important role traditional authorities continue to play in governance, cultural preservation, and community development.
