MTN Ghana is calling on the public to help protect its fibre infrastructure to ensure more reliable and high-quality network services across the country.
Speaking during a three-day community engagement in Enchi in the Western North Region, the Network Group Manager for the Southwest, Maxwell Acquah, said many of the network disruptions affecting several communities are largely the result of frequent fibre cuts.
The engagement, held in the Aowin Traditional Area, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, representatives of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), members of the Muslim community, and the media.
Discussions focused on the growing incidence of fibre damage, which has been linked to illegal mining (galamsey), palm wine tapping activities, and fuel theft.

Participants at the engagement also raised concerns about persistent network challenges along the Enchi–Asankragua–Sefwi corridor, as well as disruptions linked to military anti-galamsey operations in the area.
Mr. Acquah identified illegal mining as a key factor contributing to repeated fibre cable damage. He further explained that some farmers and palm wine tappers unintentionally contribute to the problem during their daily activities.
“For some time now, we’ve observed that fibre cuts are the main cause of network challenges. Palm wine tappers, for instance, sometimes make use of the protective pipes covering our cables, which ends up damaging them,” he said.
He urged residents to stay alert and report any activities that could put MTN’s infrastructure at risk, stressing that stronger community collaboration is essential to improving service delivery.
Also speaking at the event, Kennedy Ofosuhene, Corporate Services Advisor for the Southwest, highlighted ongoing initiatives by the MTN Ghana Foundation. These include scholarship programmes and blood donation exercises designed to support education and community development.
Stakeholders at the meeting pledged their readiness to work closely with MTN Ghana to safeguard infrastructure and improve network reliability. Traditional leaders in the area also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative.
MTN Ghana maintains that protecting fibre infrastructure is a shared responsibility, and a crucial step toward ensuring stable and uninterrupted communication services across the country.
