Asiedu Nketia Donates GHC50,000 to Yagbonwura’s Education Fund During Savannah Region Tour

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has pledged a donation of GHC50,000 to the Jira Yagbonwura Jewu Bii-Kunuto Education Fund during his “Thank You Tour” of the Savannah Region.

According to him, the contribution is aimed at supporting the vision of the King and Overlord of Gonja to improve education across the Gonja Kingdom and beyond. He stressed that education remains one of the most important tools for community growth and national development and assured the traditional leadership of his continued support for the Fund whenever necessary.

The pledge was announced during a visit to the Jakpa Palace, where Chairman Asiedu Nketia met chiefs and residents to express appreciation for their role in maintaining peace before, during and after the 2024 general elections, as well as their overwhelming support for the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama.

Addressing the gathering, he thanked the Yagbonwura and the people of the Gonja Kingdom for contributing to what he described as a peaceful and credible electoral process.

“I am here to express the gratitude of the NDC and myself to the chiefs and people of the Gonja Kingdom for their support during the 2024 general elections. The process was fair and peaceful,” he said.

Chairman Asiedu Nketia noted that although tensions were high ahead of the elections, with many predicting violence and instability, Ghanaians ultimately chose peace and democracy.

He also recalled his appeal during the 2024 Damba Festival at the Jakpa Palace, where he urged the Yagbonwura to work closely with leaders of the Dagbon and Mamprugu kingdoms to promote peace among the youth and political parties across Northern Ghana.

According to him, the call became necessary because the two leading presidential candidates in the 2024 elections — John Dramani Mahama of the NDC and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP — both hail from Northern Ghana. He explained that any election-related violence could have damaged the image of the northern part of the country.

Chairman Asiedu Nketia further praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding defeat early after the elections, saying the move helped ease political tension and preserve peace nationwide.

He commended the Yagbonwura and other traditional leaders in Northern Ghana for their wisdom and commitment to peace throughout the election period.

The NDC Chairman also described the outcome of the 2024 elections as a positive turning point for Ghana, adding that President John Dramani Mahama is gaining recognition both locally and internationally for his leadership.

Later, at the Damongo Youth Centre, Chairman Asiedu Nketia addressed party supporters and urged members of the NDC in the Damongo Constituency to remain united ahead of future elections.

Jira Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I expressed gratitude to the NDC Chairman for supporting the Education Fund and also appealed for the speedy completion of the Damongo water project.

The tour was attended by Deputy National Chairman Sofo Azorka, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Yusuf Sulemana, regional and constituency executives of the NDC, party cadres, youth groups and women’s groups.

Municipal Chief Executive for the Damongo Constituency, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, also used the occasion to outline some of the development projects undertaken in the constituency over the past year.
