Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, is in Albena, Bulgaria, for the prestigious 46th World Armwrestling and 27th Para Armwrestling Championships, scheduled from September 10–23, 2025. The team will join about 1,300 competitors from over 92 countries in the highly anticipated global event.
The Golden Arms will be represented by some of Ghana’s finest athletes: Daniel Acquah and Mabel Yeboah, both African champions from the Ghana Prisons Service, and Blessed Abeka Nunoo, an African champion from the Ghana Immigration Service.
Enterprising Daniel Acquah, who won four gold medals and was voted best athlete at the last Africa Championship, is poised to make an impact in the Youth 60kg men’s category at his World Championship debut. Calm but confident, four-time African gold medallist Mabel Yeboah is equally determined to make history in the Youth 60kg women’s division. Blessed Naa Abeka Nunoo, who placed 4th at the last World Championship, will be looking to secure a podium finish in the Girls 65kg after her impressive debut performance.
The team will, however, miss the expertise of World Champion and Police Officer Grace Mintah, who is sidelined by injury. Her absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the Golden Arms remain determined to deliver a strong performance and bring home medals.
The Golden Arms have been on a remarkable rise, showcasing their dominance on the continent and making steady progress globally, amassing a total medal haul of 405 at both continental and world competitions.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has played a crucial role in securing the team’s participation in the World Championships, investing in health insurance, training support, and other initiatives over the past three years.
Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, CEO of the NHIA, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting armwrestling and elevating it to elite status in Ghana.
“We are committed to ensuring a healthy nation through participation in sports, which will eventually reduce our high costs on insurance. We are proud to be associated with the success of armwrestling and will continue to support its development to ensure Ghana wins gold at the 2027 African Games in Egypt,” Dr. Bampoe said.
Team Ghana is expected to compete on September 13 and 14, facing stiff competition from some of the world’s best armwrestlers. With their recent performances at the 2024 African Games and the 2025 African Championships, the Golden Arms are certainly a force to be reckoned with.
