Dr Ekua Amoakoah Selected for Prestigious U.S. State Department Leadership Programme

Dr. Ekua Amoakoah, spokesperson and Press Secretary to former Vice President and 2028 NPP presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, has been nominated to participate in the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) of the United States Department of State, one of the world’s most respected professional exchange initiatives.

Her selection places her among a distinguished group of emerging and accomplished leaders from across the globe chosen to take part in the highly competitive programme.

The IVLP, the U.S. government’s flagship professional exchange programme, is designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of American society, governance, culture, education and economic systems. Through a combination of meetings, seminars, workshops, site visits and engagements with policymakers, industry leaders and community organisations, participants gain valuable insights and build lasting international networks.

Unlike many global exchange programmes, participation in the IVLP is by nomination only, with candidates selected exclusively through U.S. embassies around the world. There is no public application process.

Each year, more than 4,400 professionals from diverse sectors are invited to join the programme, which has become a platform for developing future leaders and fostering international cooperation.

Since its establishment in 1940, the IVLP has welcomed more than 230,000 participants worldwide, creating an influential network that includes heads of state, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, business executives and civil society leaders.

Dr. Amoakoah’s nomination represents a notable recognition of her growing profile in public communication and leadership, while also highlighting the continued participation of Ghanaian professionals in global leadership and exchange programmes.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, approximately 20 Ghanaians take part in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) each year. Since the programme began, more than 260 Ghanaians have benefited from its exchange opportunities through individual, single-country, regional and multi-regional initiatives.

Dr. Amoakoah’s nomination is being widely regarded as an important milestone in her rising career, reflecting her growing influence in public communication, governance and political leadership. The opportunity is expected to broaden her international exposure, strengthen professional networks and promote deeper collaboration between Ghanaian and American institutions.

The IVLP has a distinguished alumni network that includes some of the world’s most influential leaders. Among its Ghanaian alumni is former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who participated in the programme before assuming the nation’s highest office. Globally, former participants include Jacinda Ardern, Theresa May and António Guterres.

Although there is no publicly available evidence to suggest that Dr. Amoakoah is the only young Ghanaian ever selected for the programme, her nomination nonetheless highlights her emergence as one of the country’s promising voices in public affairs and strategic communication.

The recognition further underscores the growing international visibility of Ghanaian professionals and reflects the longstanding partnership between Ghana and the United States in advancing leadership development, professional exchange and global engagement.
