Afoko Says NPP Comeback Is Key to Bawumia’s Presidency in 2028

National Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has declared that his return to active party leadership is motivated by a desire to help the party reclaim power and pave the way for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become President of Ghana.

Speaking to party supporters during engagements across the Volta, Oti and Central regions, Mr. Afoko said his bid for the chairmanship is not driven by personal ambition but by a commitment to rebuilding the NPP and restoring it to government.

According to him, the party has the potential to stage a strong political comeback if it addresses internal divisions, strengthens party cohesion and reconnects with its grassroots base.

Mr. Afoko stressed that political power should be viewed as a tool for national development and progress, adding that the NPP must first unite its ranks before it can effectively regain the confidence of the Ghanaian electorate.

He also called on party elders and long-serving members to treat the party’s declining parliamentary representation as a wake-up call, warning that the trend underscores the urgent need for restructuring, mobilisation and renewed focus.

“The signs are clear. The party must turn the corner and work collectively to reverse this decline,” he said, noting that rebuilding trust among members through reconciliation would be critical to restoring the NPP’s competitiveness ahead of future elections.

Central to his campaign is what he describes as the “3Rs” agenda — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture. The strategy focuses on healing internal divisions, strengthening party structures from the polling station level upwards and positioning the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Afoko maintained that unity and strong grassroots organisation remain the foundation of any successful political movement, arguing that without them, the party’s prospects of returning to power would be significantly diminished.

He therefore urged party members to rally behind efforts to foster discipline, inclusiveness and collective purpose as the NPP prepares for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
