The Ghana Tertiary Education (GTEC) has issued a directive to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to immediately step down from his position due to reaching retirement age.
According to a letter released by the Commission on Friday, September 19, 2025, the Commission stated that Prof. Boampong’s continued stay as the Vice Chancellor of the University violates Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Statute 8.2 of the University of Cape Coast Statutes 2016.
The letter further directs the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto to act as interim VC.
The Commission, in the letter, also recognised a suit before the Cape Coast High Court regarding the issue, and has instructed the Chairman of the UCC Governing Council to halt any processes of appointing a new VC till a determination is made about the suit by the court.
In August 2024, GTEC directed the VC to remain at post while the commission reviewed issues regarding his reappointment.
The new directive, however, effectively strengthens the commission’s resolve, removing uncertainties surrounding Prof. Nyarko Boampong’s reappointment.
