Two arrested in connection with Spintex armed robbery

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended two individuals linked to a brazen armed robbery that transpired in Spintex, Accra, in the early hours of Sunday, September 14, 2025.

The robbery, which occurred around 3:25 a.m., targeted the residence of a 35-year-old man, leading to the theft of valuable items, including gold jewellery, electronics, and cash totalling approximately US$5,000 and GHS 21,645.

At a press briefing held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, provided details about the case.

“Acting on intelligence, the police on September 18 arrested 26-year-old Prince Opoku, also known as Agyenkwa, alongside Nigerian national Jennifer Nweke at Adenta,” she reported.

The robbery shocked the local community, prompting a swift police response.

COP Donkor explained that during the investigation, law enforcement officials recovered a machete, a metal cutter, and a T-shirt believed to belong to the suspects.

“The crime scene was documented, and investigations commenced immediately,” she stated, highlighting the thoroughness of the police’s approach.

A subsequent search of the suspects yielded critical evidence, including stolen jewellery, mobile phones, and substantial amounts of cash.

“A search conducted on them revealed some of the stolen items, including jewellery, mobile phones, and large sums of cash,” she noted, emphasising the police’s commitment to recovering stolen property and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

In a breakthrough during the interrogation, suspect Opoku confessed to his role in the robbery and named an accomplice, identified as Mensah, alias Taller, as the mastermind behind the operation.

“During interrogation, suspect Opoku admitted his involvement in the crime and mentioned one Mensah, alias Taller, as his accomplice and leader of the operation,” COP Donkor revealed.

This admission has prompted police to intensify their efforts in tracking down Mensah and other accomplices believed to be involved in the crime. “Strenuous efforts are currently underway to trace and arrest other suspects who are currently on the run to face justice,” COP Donkor assured the public.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as armed robberies in Accra have seen a notable increase over the past year.

According to statistics from the Ghana Police Service, there were over 150 reported armed robbery cases across the Greater Accra Region in 2024, with the Spintex area frequently cited as a hotspot for such crimes.

In response to the rising crime rates, local authorities are working on implementing community safety initiatives, including increased police patrols and public awareness campaigns about crime prevention. Community leaders have called for residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police.
