Police in the Ashanti Region have launched a manhunt for six armed robbers who attacked a team bus carrying players of Berekum Chelsea, leaving one footballer dead.
In a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, the Ashanti Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are underway to swiftly apprehend the suspects. “The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyanihin District. The team was returning to Berekum from Samreboi when their bus came under attack.
Police say six armed men, three of them wielding pump-action guns, ambushed the VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20. In a bid to escape, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed into nearby bushes.
According to the police, patrol teams responded quickly after receiving distress calls and found the bus carrying about 30 players and officials stranded off the road following the attempted escape.
During the attack, one of the players, Dominic Frimpong, suffered gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
Another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GHS 4,500 during the incident. Investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges from the scene to support ongoing inquiries.
The killing has heightened concerns within the Ghana Premier League and among the public, renewing fears about the safety of night travel on highways.
Police say additional personnel, including crime scene experts, have been deployed to track down the attackers. No arrests have been made so far, and authorities are appealing to the public to remain calm and share any relevant information.
