Asante Kotoko have dismissed reports suggesting that interim coach Prince Owusu went AWOL, insisting he was granted permission to be absent amid mounting pressure following the club’s poor run of form.
Owusu has come under scrutiny after managing just two wins in his last eight matches, a dip in results that has seen the Porcupine Warriors drop to sixth on the league table, 10 points behind leaders Medeama SC.
His absence from Thursday’s training session sparked speculation that he had left camp following alleged threats from supporters.
However, the club has strongly denied those claims, clarifying that the coach was away on approved leave.
In a statement, Kotoko said: “The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue.
“Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother.
“He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning, and any further updates or decisions will be communicated in due course.”
The club also confirmed that Owusu will remain in charge of the team until a substantive head coach is appointed.
Kotoko are next scheduled to face Dreams FC in their upcoming league fixture on May 3.
