The President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Alhaji Musah Akanbomga, has called on young people across Ghana’s Zongo communities to steer clear of drug abuse and prioritise their education to secure a better future.

Addressing a Muslim festival in Kumasi, he described the rising use of illicit substances among the youth as a growing national concern that threatens the country’s human capital development.
Alhaji Akanbomga warned that drugs such as “red pills,” tramadol, marijuana, shisha, and codeine mixtures are quietly derailing the ambitions of many young people.
“Drugs are turning our youth into slaves. We cannot afford to fail this generation. True strength lies in self-control, discipline, and a sense of purpose,” he stressed.
He urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to take a more active role in tackling the problem, emphasising that the fight against drug abuse must be collective.

“This is not a burden for schools alone. It requires a united front from all stakeholders,” he said.
While commending the government for recognising the urgency of the issue, he noted that safeguarding the future of Ghana depends on how well the nation protects and nurtures its youth today.
Alhaji Akanbomga also expressed concern about the impact of substance abuse on education, explaining that it undermines concentration, discipline, and academic performance.
He added that beyond the classroom, drug abuse can weaken willpower, erode confidence, and contribute to mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and hallucinations.
He further lamented what he described as the alarming rise in opioid trafficking and the widespread misuse of psychotropic substances in many communities, urging government and stakeholders to intensify efforts to curb the menace.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, also addressed the gathering, outlining government initiatives aimed at empowering the youth.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, expressed gratitude to residents of Ashaiman for their support during the 2024 general elections.

He encouraged party members to remain patient and united, assuring them that President John Dramani Mahama is working to fulfil campaign promises and complete stalled projects, particularly in the Ashanti Region
